Button Trees - Great Christmas Craft

Looking for a fun craft to do this Christmas Holiday Season?

These Button Christmas Trees were SO much fun to make!!  Of course it's even more fun when you craft with friends.. so gather some friends, have them each bring some old buttons, straight pins and a styrofoam cone.. you'll be in for hours of fun and giggles!

Button Christmas Trees featuring retired Stampin Up! buttons and styrofoam cones by Patty Bennett, Joy and Roxy

My friend Joy and I saw this idea on Pinterest LAST YEAR and never had time to make our trees, so we finally set a date, and invited Roxanne to join us, and the 3 of us sat and had the best afternoon making our button trees last weekend!

Button Tree Supplies you'll need:

  • Styrofoam cone (tree) - we used 9", 10", 12" and 14" cones, available at craft stores
  • Buttons - we used between 250 and 350 buttons per tree (approx) - mostly retired Stampin' Up! buttons
  • Straight pins with pearl heads - we used white and red, approx 350 to 450 per tree (some buttons required 2 or 4 pins to keep them secure).  Click to see the white ones I used.
  • a topper "ornament" for your tree - optional

Supplies for Button Christmas Trees featuring retired Stampin Up! buttons and styrofoam cones by Patty Bennett, Joy and Roxy

These were the buttons I brought for us to share (plus the huge ones not shown in this photo), and I think almost all of them are retired Stampin' UP! buttons (me, a hoarder??).  I did buy the cute bright green ones on the left on Amazon along with the pins.

Button Christmas Trees featuring retired Stampin Up! buttons and styrofoam cones by Patty Bennett, Joy and Roxy

The cone above is a green styrofoam cone, and you'll notice it shows between the buttons... which was ok with me.

I also found pre-glittered cones last year and we used those for our trees, too.

Button Christmas Trees featuring retired Stampin Up! buttons and styrofoam cones by Patty Bennett, Joy and Roxy

When I posted these on Facebook last weekend, I was asked if I had any tips...

  • pick a color scheme
  • start around the bottom, then work your way up
  • I preferred to work with my larger buttons toward the bottom and tried to use smaller ones at the top
  • fill in empty spots with tiny buttons
  • have more pins on hand than you think you'll need
  • have fun!!

Are they just too much fun or what!?  I love them!! I'm so glad we made them!

Record your Family Christmas Memories in this fun Scrapbook, created with Stampin' Up! supplies!

More fun Candy Cane Lane Christmas cards, scrapbook and craft ideas for you!

On our recent stamping cruise in October, one of the projects was a 6" x 8" Christmas Scrapbook.  Jenn had cut all of the supplies for us to make do142zens of scrapbook pages for our album.  We had also made a Project Life Christmas scrapbook album on this cruise, so I told Jenn I was going to take the supply packet and create cards instead of scrapbook pages.

Today I am sharing those cards with you!  I hope you enjoy the idea and see how you can turn the same basic supplies into scrapbook pages to preserve your family holiday memories, or you can create holiday greetings or Thank You cards from the same supplies! :)

Below is the cover of the album Jenn designed, and photos of me holding the cards I made next to the scrapbook pages she designed.  Enjoy!

Repurposed Paper Pumpkin Teddy Bear Box

I'm sending a box full of bear hugs to my niece!!  We were chatting one day and she mentioned that she cannot find her Snail adhesive after moving across country, so I knew that I had to send her a care package!!

I repurposed my November Paper Pumpkin kit box and filled it with a variety of Stampin' Up! adhesives for her! :)

Fa la la la friends bear hugs box by Patty Bennett. Stampin Up! stamps, ink and paper crafting supplies. Repurposed Paper Pumpkin kit box.

And what's a box of bear hugs without some cute bears!?  :)

I stamped and die cut these adorable bears using the Fa-la-la-la Friends stamp set (pg 30 in the 2016 Stampin' Up! Holiday catalog or HERE in my online store), and die cut them with the Bear Hugs framelits (pg 193 in the annual catalog, #140275 online), and of course I had to make them some cute plaid sweaters and jammies using the Warmth & Cheer plaid papers from the Holiday catalog (pg 13, or #141991 online).

Follow my Quick instructions to make your own Bears in Sweaters!

Don't you love them!?  I do!  I hope Jenny loves the box of treats!!  Love you Jenny!!

I covered the top of the box with some Presents & Pinecones paper to hide the mailing label, but the rest of the box is perfect because it has sweet holiday wishes printed on the sides!

Do you Give Gift Cards at the Holidays?

Gift Cards... do you give Gift Cards? We probably all do, right?  Family, Friends, Mailman, UPS guy, co-workers, teachers, grandkids, etc.

Well, here is a creative way to present an otherwise boring gift card!

Merry Tags Gift Card Holders featuring Stampin' Up! bags, paper and embellishments by Patty Bennett, www.PattyStamps.com

All I did was to fold a bag in half, in this case I used the Glassine Gift Bags, but you can use the Kraft Gift bags, too, as shown in the video below.  Purchase either of these bag options in my online store and find on page 176 in the 2016 annual Stampin' Up! catalog.  See all of the supplies used for these projects listed at the bottom of this blog post.

Watch my video below from last year.. different supplies, same concept:

Click here to watch the video on YouTube if you are reading this in a email!

Click here to see more ideas using this design idea.

Or, maybe you just want to tuck in other goodies like candy, family photos, a note, theater tickets, etc., .. fill the 2 pockets with whatever you'd like!

Each of these gift card holders was embellished with the "This Christmas" designer paper and die cut images from the Merry Tags framelit dies.

Merry Tags Gift Card Holders featuring Stampin' Up! bags, paper and embellishments by Patty Bennett, www.PattyStamps.com

As you'll see in the video, simply wrap a 10" to 12" piece of designer paper around the folded bag and decorate.. could not be any simpler!! :)

The bag itself creates 2 pockets for you to fill!

Mica Flakes, found on page 41 in the 2016 Holiday catalog, or here in my online store.

Don't the trees look amazing?

They are stamped in Garden Green and Old Olive on Pear Pizzazz and Emerald Envy cardstock, die cut with the Santa's Sleigh framelits, and then we added the mica flakes, per above.

How I Distressed Pine Boards for Photo Backgrounds

If you follow me on Facebook, you probably saw the fun pile of pine wood boards that my neighbor left by my front door.  Many of you asked what I was going to do with them?  Well, they are for the backgrounds of my blog post projects!!

HOWEVER, I came across a little issue....  the pine is so "yellow" that it fools my camera and it makes all the photos really yellow, which require a ton of photoshoping to make them look better.. so.. I decided to buy some paint and start painting and distressing the yellow-ish pine boards to make them look more interesting and a little bit like they'd been weathered for a long time!

How to distress wood pine boards by Patty Bennett at www.pattystamps.com

The boards were single left over pine planks from who knows what project.. and my neighbor (handy-dandy woodshop neighbor) glued them together into larger pieces.. he sanded them and did the beveled edges on them too!!  It's so great to have handy friends!!!! :)

You can see from the photo below, that the pine boards I found in our garden shed, are quite yellow, and after my "distressing process" I managed to make them all look totally different!

How to distress wood pine planks pattystamps before

Before and After: How to distress wood pine boards by Patty Bennett at www.pattystamps.com

After Distressing wood pine boards by Patty Bennett at www.pattystamps.com

I really should have looked on Youtube before I started this process, but I just dove right in with some bottles of acrylic paint, old paint brushes, an old toothbrush, foam brushes, sand paper and old rags.

It was about a 3 day process as I was trying to get the house decorated for Christmas at the same time, and couldn't devote all my time to this project.

My (totally amateur) process to distress the wood:

  1. start with a wash of paint (acrylic paint watered down) and applied with a foam brush
  2. sand when dry
  3. add a 2nd color the same way as #1
  4. sand when dry
  5. add a 3rd color with a very dry paint brush to give the appearance of wood grain (with a light touch)
  6. sand when dry
  7. evaluate... like it? stop!  needs more color? (probably!) :) add more colors either as a wash or with a dry paintbrush
  8. add paint speckles or streaks with the toothbrush dipped in paint
  9. distress wood with wire brush, coarse sand paper, or anything that will rough it up a bit
  10. apply more paint
  11. sand again
  12. ya, you get the idea... you could do this for days....  I had to make myself stop!

Notes:

For the blue ones, I started with white paint and added blue, then added more white

For the light ones, I started with white paint and added hints of gray, black and brown (with a very dry brush)

For the dark ones, I started with brown paint, and added white, gray and black paint

On some of the boards, I dipped my rag into water then into paint and kind of washed over the boards.

I basically experimented with every possible combination I could think of. :)

When I am ready to photograph my craft projects, I place them on a board and take photos, as you can see below:

I experiment with different boards depending on the color and size of the project, then crop the photo and add my watermark as shown below.

Christmas Banner featuring Candy Cane Lane paper

It was a first for the Bennett Family.. we stayed home on Thanksgiving AND we put up our Christmas Tree and decorated for Christmas!!  It has actually been really nice enjoying the lights and festive decorations the last several days, and not feeling rushed to get it all done right before Christmas like we usually do! :)

This year I added the Stampin' UP! "Candy Cane Lane" Christmas Banner to our fireplace decor!

I made this pretty DIY Christmas banner on the recent Caribbean stamping cruise we went on in October, and I couldn't wait to hang it up in our home!!  The banner was designed by Jenn Gulch (she hosted the cruise - see more info here).  Each piece of the banner is die cut with cardstock and designer paper and the Banner Framelits!! So easy!!  If you didn't have these framelits you could cut the banners by hand, but it's really SO quick and easy with the framelits, I highly recommend having them for this project!

As you can see in the close up views, each "banner" piece is die cut in either Real Red or Crumb Cake cardstock in a larger size than the Candy Cane Lane designer paper banner piece.  Just layer them together with adhesive, then decorate each piece!

The decorations are so fun.. they spell out Merry Christmas, using the Large Letters framelits, and they are layered with circles of vellum or a Delicate White Doily.  Each banner piece is embellished with something fun, either stamped and punched from the super popular Cookie Cutter Bundle (gingerbread man/girl or reindeer), or the whimsical Jolly Hat builder punch!  Some images are also cut out of the Candy Cane Lane paper, like the gingerbread houses.

To hang the banner pieces, use the Kraft Rope Trim (pg 13 Holiday catalog #141996) and mini clothespins (ON SALE in the CLEARANCE RACK for only $2.20 per pack while supplies last!)

If you don't have space for "Merry Christmas" consider doing a smaller one with Noel, or Merry, or Snow, or Cheers.

Truly, is this just adorable or what!?  I love it!

Wink of Stella Gifts for Luv 2 Stamp Group

 Special Notice!

CLICK HERE for Online Extravaganza Sale Starting Tomorrow, Nov. 21!

------------------------

Each month, I love to recognize and celebrate my Luv 2 Stamp group (Stampin' UP! team) who have excelled in sales, recruiting and promoting.  We celebrate these accomplishments on our private Facebook group.  I also send out gifts in the mail for promotions and top in sales!

These are the fun gifties I mailed to the top 15 in sales for October!

Stampin UP! Petite Cafe Gift Bags with Christmas trees and Wink of Stella for Luv 2 Stamp Group top sellers, by Patty Bennett

I used a Stampin' Up! Petite Cafe Gift bag, cut the top closure off, and stamped it with snowflakes and my White StazOn ink pad.  Then I added some "snow" - simply a piece of Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer paper cut with a wavy edge and my paper snips. After that, I added pine trees, die cut with the Santa's Sleigh thinlits and Presents & Pinecones designer paper.

Inside each bag is a Clear Wink of Stella as a little gifty for each of the top 15 sellers in the Luv 2 Stamp group.  You can NEVER have enough Wink of Stella.. trust me!

NOTE: it probably wasn't the best decision to use StazOn on my photopolymer snowflake stamps... so if you have a wood mount or clear mount snowflake, I'd recommend that instead.

Embossed Goodie Bags - So Pretty!

I was packaging up welcome packets for my new Luv 2 Stamp group demonstrators and I had a brainstorm moment... I decided instead of just putting little gifts in plain Kraft Bags, why not emboss the bags first!?   OH MY>> I love them!  These Kraft bags are embossed with the Holly embossing folder and the Pine Bough embossing folder from Stampin' Up!

DIY embossed Kraft gift bags from Stampin' Up! with Holly and Pine Bough embossing folders. Great gift wrap packaging for small gifts by Patty Bennett, www.PattyStamps.com

I decorated the welcome gifts with the Holly embossing folder and Candy Cane Lane designer paper, and then just kept decorating bags, using Presents & Pinecones paper and the Merry Tags thinlits, THEN I decided to add die cut pinecones, holly berries and pine boughs with the Pretty Pines thinlits!!

 Quick Look at the supplies:

  • Kraft gift bags, pg 176 annual catalog, #138315
  • Pine Bough embossing folder, pg 20 of the 2016 Holiday catalog, #141831
  • Holly embossing folder, pg 195 annual catalog, #141634
  • Candy Cane Lane designer paper, pg 5 2016 Holiday catalog, #141981
  • Presents & Pinecones designer paper, pg 18 2016 Holiday catalog, #141986
  • Pretty Pines thinlits, pg 19 2016 Holiday catalog, #141851
  • Merry Tags bundle, pg 21 2016 Holiday catalog, #143520 / 143519

October reminder: the Presents & Pinecones and the Candy Cane Lane paper packs are on special .. Buy 3 Get 1 Free October 2016 special!  Shop here in my online store!

After embossing the bag, I put the gift inside, then cut a 2"x12" strip of designer paper, folded it in 1/2 then folded it around the bag and stapled at the top.  This "belly band" can slip off the bag so the recipient can regift this bag if they want to.

The doilies and other embellishments are added to the belly band, so nothing is stuck to the bag.

They are pretty cheery little gifts, don't you think?  My friend Cindee has shown me by example over the years that the packaging is 1/2 the gift... so I have been trying to dress up the packaging when I send a little gifty :)

Welcome gifts for the Luv 2 Stamp group: DIY embossed Kraft gift bags from Stampin' Up! with Holly embossing folder. Great gift wrap packaging for small gifts by Patty Bennett, www.PattyStamps.com

I used both the Watermelon Wonder striped ribbon and the Red Stitched Edge ribbon to add a little extra pop of color to these bags.

I also added In Color Doilies and Gold Foil metallic doilies and either stamped focal images, or tags from the Merry Tags framelits and stamp set bundle.  (Save 10% when you buy a bundle!)

Above: this bag features a piece of paper from the This Christmas designer paper package in the annual catalog.

When you are "building" these medallions with pine boughs, I found it easiest to use either Glue Dots or Multipurpose liquid glue and build the whole thing while holding it in my hand, then add it to the package.. see below for picture description:

Isn't the Merry Tags embellishment pretty when it's die cut with the Gold Foil paper!!??

After adding all those fun pine bough layers, I added some of the Mini Pinecone copper embellishments with some Linen Thread.  Just the perfect finishing touch!

Christmas Home Decor Frames - Stampin Up!

I am soooooooo excited about these cute Christmas Frame projects!! I created Christmas Home Decor framed pieces that I will display on my mantle this Christmas season!  I used lots of different Stampin' Up! framelits, punches, papers, and accessories.. I hope you enjoy this blog post and VIDEO TUTORIAL as I teach you how to create your own!

Home Decor Christmas Framed art featuring STampin' Up! stocking framelits, pines framelits, santa's sleigh framelits, hearth & home framelits, brick wall embossing folder and more! by Patty Bennett

You can see that I made 2 of them.. an 8x10 framed piece and a 5x7 framed piece.  I had so much fun I could not stop at one!

Watch the video below for some details and to see the Stampin' UP! supplies I used.

If you are watching this in an email feed, click HERE to see the video on YouTube.

In the 5x7 frame below, I used a smaller scale design, with a smaller fireplace, and the smaller Christmas stockings from the Santa's Sleigh thinlit set.

For all the details on how to create the fireplace, see the video above.  I used the Hearth & Home thinlits with an inset of Brick Wall embossed cardstock.

The gray brick background on both pieces is from the Halloween Night designer paper pack, and the "floor" is crumb cake cardstock stamped with the Hardwood background stamp.

I have detailed instructions in the video above for the fireplace logs as well.  I stamped them with the Hardwood background stamp and did some shading and coloring to make them look like logs.

For the larger 8x10 frame below, I added the window and made the fireplace larger.

Home Decor Christmas Framed art featuring STampin' Up! stocking framelits, pines framelits, santa's sleigh framelits, hearth & home framelits, brick wall embossing folder and more! by Patty Bennett

Design Note:

You could take any portion of either of these framed pieces and create a card or tag with those design elements... you could do something with the fireplace, or the tree and window.. think about ways to use these ideas separately as well.

Supplies for Home Decor Christmas Framed art featuring STampin' Up! stocking framelits, pines framelits, santa's sleigh framelits, hearth & home framelits, brick wall embossing folder and more! by Patty Bennett

Below:  These Christmas stockings are in from the Christmas Stockings thinlit die set, die cut in Cherry Cobbler, Emerald Envy and Whisper White.  As you can see, I used a Project Life marker to write Mom, Dad and JB on them (for the 3 of us) :).   NOEL is also found in the same thinlit die set and I placed it on the mantel.   The fireplace is created with the Hearth and Home thinlits and some embossed Cherry Cobbler Bricks.

Crafting Tip:

Use some heavy duty wire cutters and snip off the ring on the top of the Gingerbread man trinket so that you can add him to the Gingerbread houses! :)

Craft Tip: snip off the ring on the gingerbread man if you don't need it! I used heavy duty wire cutters. Christmas Trinkets from STampin' Up!, click shop online at www.PattyStamps.com and order #141997

Below:  Gingerbread men added to the cut out Gingerbread houses.. they are cut by hand with paper snips from the Candy Cane Lane Designer paper (part of the Buy 3 Get 1 Free offer good through 10/31/16).

Below:  the window is also created with the Hearth & Home thinlits, and I put a piece of Fancy Frost embossed paper behind it as well as the reindeer die cut.  I made simple curtains by cutting some of a doily.

Above: the Tree is die cut from the Santa's Sleigh framelit set and the presents are all just small squares and rectangles cut from scraps from the Candy Cane Lane Designer paper.  The red bows are punched using Real Red cardstock and the Holly Berry Builder punch.  The tree topper start is a die cut in the Santa's Sleigh framelit set, I cut it out of Daffodil Delight cardstock and colored it with a Gold Wink of Stella pen.

Above: As noted above and in the video above, this 5x7 frame is just basically a smaller version of the big one.. everything is scaled down a bit.  Smaller fireplace with smaller stockings, smaller presents, no gingerbread houses.

The tree is die cut using the Santa's Sleigh framelits out of a piece of the Presents & Pinecone paper, and sponged with Cucumber Crush ink and "winked" with the clear Wink of Stella... here is how I did that:

Logs in the fireplace!! Home Decor Christmas Framed art featuring STampin' Up! stocking framelits, pines framelits, santa's sleigh framelits, hearth & home framelits, brick wall embossing folder and more! by Patty Bennett

The smaller Christmas stockings on this piece were die cut from the Santa's Sleigh framelits using the Warmth & Cheer designer paper stack.  The logs were stamped with the Woodgrain background stamp, and I share complete instructions for those with you in the video above in this blog post.

I hope you enjoyed this project and the video tutorial!!   The frames are from the "M store" and yes, the cherry cobbler one was already distressed... great find! :)
